Group 5.4 Oral Health Visit 2

Group Four's Here!!Firstly our group consist of eight people, according to how we sit in briefing room, it's Mahes, Narjit, Ee Chean, Sett, Andy, Xin Yi, Praveena and Fiza. Our Group 5.4 assigned to Tadika Kemas at Bedong but due to the unavailability of pictures from the first visit, we'll just going to report on our 2nd visit for now.
During our 2nd visit we're more well prepared, loaded with more games and fun for the kids, we make our way to Tadika Kemas eager to do a good job.

Our main aim this visit is to educate and create awareness to good oral health. This time role playing is our first activity of the day. We got mini lab coats for the kids, mouth mirrors and pen torch, we also bring along our own big torches just in case.
.
Role Playing
Just minutes after we reached there, Praveena gathers all the children and quickly separate them into two groups of ten and nine, one of the group will be colouring a huge poster that we prepare while the other half will be doing role play in different rooms. Role playing task is to let the kids have an idea of a good oral health, what's a healthy tooth and what's not under the guidance of us.

We showed each of them how a decayed tooth looks like with all the black spots, turns out most of them show enthusiasm in poking around their friends' mouth.

Just a wall away, the children are showing no less interest in coloring, in fact some of the doctor kids came over to peep on what his/her friends are doing, they kept asking when they can start the coloring which make it slightly difficult to let them concentrate on role playing.

Coloring station
is held by four of us, the kids just love Fiza, they are all virtually stuck with her so asking them to colour is just piece of cake. So the first round the children spent 20 minutes filling up the several pieces of white papers with crayon colours, well still we help by joining in the fun with them. What we plan is to let them color separate pieces of the posters and join them all together once they're done.

You be surprise how a dozen of kids effort can work out a nice poster which is uploaded up.
*Scroll right down to see their masterpiece*
Purely their own colouring technique and imagination.

Soon we switched the two groups of children and have them repeat what their friends had done. Here are few pictures of the children hard at work.
Everything took place in a hasty manner since we took note of our main lesson from the first visit about children's short concentration span. After another 20 minutes of role playing and coloring... wallaaa

We finished with the role playing with time to spare so we took a photo with all the super young doctors. And the piece of art they produce is just cool once we join all pieces together.

Frog Jump
Our next event took part immediately after the role playing and coloring job, it's a game requiring not only brain power but also physical strength as you can see from the title. Anyway we divide the kids into two groups competing each other for attractive rewards of nice stickers of
their favorite cartoon characters.

.

If you wonder why frog jump and stickers have anything to do with dental education, here comes the tricky part, once a kid succeed in hopping to the end of the tracks we prepared, they are asked to squeeze out just a pea sized amount and not more of toothpaste onto their toothbrush prepared. Then it will be a continuous relay of 6 kids per group, the main aim is to teach them to use the suitable amount of toothpaste each time they brushes their teeth.

The race and the reward for the first finisher is just an entertaining spin.
We can see Xin Yi here stopping those exciting kids from running off before their friends got back....lol

Before both us and the kids went off for our lunch break..
or rather our breakfast break, we end the first half of our day with a song. It's a modification of the famous twinkle twinkle little star melody, we put in our own lyrics and make it "Sayangi Gigi Anda".. and to our surprise the kids pick that up very fast and it's just a while the kids are singing together with us.

Andy and Sett brought their guitars and together we all lead the big sing along. We left the lyrics on the board before we left hopefully the kids will learn it well. It helps anyway to remember what good food to eat and what food to avoid... because the lyrics go like " Makan Sayur Sayuran... dan juga buah buahan...."

The Cikgu there seems please with our effort to sing songs with the kids, some of the naughty boys are almost screaming their throats off while singing...ehmmm.. metal music potential?

After the sing along, we all took a break while the kids have their breakfast.... it also gave us time to prepare for the next event - Treasure Hunt -
We received generous chocolate gifts from our Group Lecturer Dr.Fellani who also kindly helped us took a group photo together with the kids' masterpiece.

Dr.Fellani has been with us since our first visit and had given us valuable guidance and encouragement throughout the whole process. By that time we were all sweating slightly due to the hot weather but it was all good, the work it's all worth it and the fun is the driving force behind.

All Eight Of Us

After the break -Treasure Hunt-
Soon after the break we started off the new game of treasure hunt, kids are suppose to hunt down the toothbrushes that we specially prepare for them. Obviously we can't hide it some where serious.. all the brushes are just lying around everywhere and the kids are just running towards everywhere once the game started which ended after 2 minutes.

Here's a picture showing the toothbrushes we hid.

Since from the first visit we've been giving out a lot of cartoon character stickers as gifts to the kids, also as a positive reinforcer for good behaviors and right attitude, encouragement to obedience. But soon some of the kids became more serious in expanding their collections of stickers till they crave for more.

The truth is that all stickers end up on shirts, hands and even hairs, we knew those things aren't going to last long but oh well... as long as the kids are happy.

Here's Xin Yi giving out the remaining stickers to the kids.

Finally... ToothBrushing Drill

Little Danny here was as excited as we are, he kept running up to the camera and ask us to take photo of him posing..

As we prepare the kids making sure each of them gets their toothbrushes and rinsing mugs, the kids are running around and wearing their shoes as we are going around to the side of the kindergarden to carry out the drill.

As motivated as the rest, some of us took a photo with the kids with our hands up as a sign of support to good oral health.

As how we always function, we divide the kids into much more smaller groups, handling 4 person to each of us and carried out the drill.
This time we came with plaque disclosing pills to maximize the effects of the drill by showing them the amount of plaque before and after brushes.
Naughty boys up front

Mahes and Fiza with the good girls of the class
Narjit Assigned to the naughty boys..lol
Kids brushing properly supervised by helpless looking Ee Chean...?
Serious Andy hard at work with his tools
Naughty boys once again...
We completed the toothbrushing drill with time to spare so we decided to sing together with the children once again, we're relieve that the children are more than eager to sing with us once more our self-created "love your teeth" anthem.

After singing, praveena again took the liberty to host the outro of our visit bringing all to an end. Of course we are very thankful to the teachers there for letting us do this, the children are very well behave that they each shook our hands as sign of respect before we leave.

Finally we took a group photo with all of them in front of the kindergarten just in front of a nice green patch of lawn.
